Technical Specifications:

Discovered by researchers at the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) Telescope in 2018, FRB 180916 is a repeating transient radio pulse originating from an object in the SDSS J015800.28+654253.0 system, a massive spiral galaxy approximately 457 million light-years from our solar system. While little is known about the object and its periodic repeater radio pulse, it is hypothesized that it might relate to a neutron star or a wind event of an OB-type star binary system that occurred during the Ordovician period.

FRB 180916 seems to produce a periodic repeater pattern in pulse bursts occurring every 16.35 days. Researchers have observed FRB 180916 pulses to occur approximately 1 or 2 per hour for four days before going silent for 12 days and then repeating the cycle.

Beginning in 2020, researchers at CHIME began transducing FRB 180916 pulse data in order to understand the origins, and perhaps, purpose of the periodic repeater radio pulse. In one experiment, CHIME researcher, Dr. S.R. Joseon gathered FRB 180916 pulse data from March 13th 2020 and transduced it through consumer level musical notation software. Intrigued with the results, Dr. Joseon commissioned 3 Canadian synthesists to perform the compositions rendered from the data set. These are the results of that exercise.
